Chapter 20 Mass Balance

The Europa has all-moving tailplanes. These need to be balanced with great lumps of iron. These in turn need a containment structure.

First the dimensions need to be set out. With 3 loose parts, 4 critical dimensions and no fixed point this is not easy.

Once the bolt is in it becomes a little more stable

With the front on it begins to look like something, and with some judicious use of the hot glue gun it actually stays up by itself

Trimming and sanding are always very satisfying- a ragged mess in no time becomes a real part

Now to fix the whole lot back in the fuselage. To make it removable I cover the bottom in cling film before applying the bid bracket. Wondrous stuff this film- it really clings to everything except when you want it to (as in this case).

Tufnol guide strips need to be installed on the inside of the containment. The Manual tells you to carefully countersink the holes with a drill between your fingers. That will take till Christmas. I just shove it under the bench press and the job is perfectly done in seconds

To find out where the brackets should meet the splash moulding I hot glue two pieces of wood between the containment and the molding, positioned against the upper fuselage. To just do that require all the athleticisism and dexterity I have. To really build the brackets as per the manual you would have to be a midget with double jointed elbows.

Wisened up by the bottom backets I dispense with the cling film and use parcel tape instead.

Final touch is the upper stop, made of plywood with a piece of fuel hose as a buffer.

The acid test of course is whether you´ve done it right. With the top back on it fits like a dream!
